The Carnival celebration in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil is best known for its Samba Parades, which are competitions between Rio Samba Schools (RSC♦♦). The parades take place every year in the Sambadrome, the permanent parade ground built in 1984. Like Mardi Gras (Fat Tuesday) in New Orleans, the festival ends with the start of Lent on Ash Wednesday.
Judges named Beija-Flor school the winner out of 12 competing schools on Mar. 9th. The schools are community groups geared towards putting on huge Carnival parades.
